Giovanni Tiepolo (born April 12, 1570 in Venice , † May 7, 1631 in Venice ) was an Italian Catholic clergyman and from 1619 to 1631 Patriarch of Venice .

biography

He belonged to one of the noblest families of the Venetian nobility and was elected Primicerius of St. Mark's Basilica by the Doge in 1609 . For him it was a time of intensive ecclesiastical studies and publications that made him so famous that after the death of Cardinal Francesco Vendramin on November 20, 1619, the Venetian Senate elected him as the new Patriarch . Under his patriarchy, the Cathedral of San Pietro di Castello was completely rebuilt.

He died of the plague epidemic on May 7, 1631 and was buried in his cathedral, with an inscription with four Ds, an acronym of the phrase Dilexi Decorem Domus Domini (Psalm 26 [25], 8, Vulgate ), in memory of the building of the Church.
