As a layman, he was elected to the office of Patriarch of Venice on July 26, 1605 by the Venetian Senate with 132 votes to 73 . The election was confirmed by the Pope on May 12, 1608. On the following May 26th, Pope Paul V consecrated him bishop , with the support of Fabio Biondi , titular patriarch of Jerusalem, and Metello Bichi, bishop of Sovana.

The Borghese -Pope appointed him on December 2, 1615 in the consistory also for Cardinal .
