Bernard Maciejowski (* 1548 in Małopolska , Poland ; † January 19, 1608 in Cracow ) was a cardinal , Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland .

Life

His parents were Bernard Maciejowski, castellan in Lublin, and his second wife Elżbieta z Kamienieckich. His uncle Samuel Maciejowski was bishop of Kraków from 1546 to 1550 .

Bernard Maciejowski was ordained a priest in 1586 and was appointed Bishop of Łuck on June 8, 1587 . The episcopal ordination took place on January 24, 1588 by the Archbishop of Gniezno Stanisław Karnkowski . On May 23, 1600 Maciejowski was called to be Bishop of Cracow. In the consistory of June 9, 1604, Pope Clement VIII created him cardinal and on January 7, 1605 he was installed as cardinal priest of San Giovanni a Porta Latina .

He did not take part in the first conclave in 1605 , which Leo XI. elected Pope, took part in the second conclave of the same year, from which Paul V emerged as Pope. On July 31, 1606, Bernard Maciejowski was made Archbishop of Gniezno and Primate of Poland. He was legatus a latere at the wedding of Siegmund III. with Constanze of Austria . He was cardinal protector of the Jesuits and supported the decisions of the Council of Trent .

Bernard Maciejowski died in the episcopate and was buried in the Arch-Cathedral of Gniezno .
