Giovanni della Rovere (* 1457 in Albissola near Savona ; † November 6, 1501 in Senigallia ) was Signore of Senigallia in the Marche .

origin

Giovanni della Rovere came from a humble background and was born in Albissola near Savona . His parents were Raffaelo della Rovere and his wife Theodora Manerola. The election of his uncle Francesco della Rovere as Pope Sixtus IV on August 9, 1471 changed the fate of the whole family: Giovanni's brother Giuliano and his cousin Pietro Riario were made cardinals . Giovanni, his other brother Leonardo della Rovere and cousin Girolamo Riario were assigned to secular duties. Leonardo became Prefect of Rome and Duke of Sora , Girolamo Lord of Imola and Forli .

Career

Giovanni was appointed Signor of Senigallia by his uncle Pope Sixtus in December 1475 . In the following years, further domains were added. Even after the death of his uncle Sixtus in 1484, his career continued, so from the end of 1485 to 1487 Giovanni was Captain General of the Holy Roman Church , an office that corresponded to the supreme command of the papal troops. In 1499 he became captain general of the Republic of Florence. The Rocca Roveresca , a Renaissance fortress designed by Baccio Pontelli and Luciano Laurana , is a reminder of his rule over Senigallia .
