Gippinger Grien
The Gippinger Grien is a nature reserve in the canton of Aargau . It is one of the Swiss floodplain landscapes of national importance and belongs to the Aargau floodplain protection park .
The protected area designated in 1994 is located near the village of Gippingen in the municipality of Leuggern . The area with an area of around 39 hectares forms the rest of the once much larger floodplain landscape on the lower reaches of the Aare west of Klingnau . In the middle of the extensive plain, which had numerous open gravel areas, called Grien in the vernacular , the Klingnau reservoir with the Klingnau power station was built around 1931 . Outside the left side dam of the reservoir and below the power plant, an unused landscape with watercourses and jungle developed in the rest of the former meadow landscape with a cut branch of the Aare. It is comparable to the nature reserve Fischergrien-Werd in the south of the reservoir.
In the northern part of the Gippinger Griens, which is partially separated from the underwater of the power plant by a relic of the former bank construction, there are open water areas with reeds . Groundwater outcrop feeds the side waters in places. Around 2000, the canton of Aargau had the partially silted-up bodies of water reopened and expanded.
In the south, the nature reserve has reed areas, forests and isolated bodies of water. This section with an area of around 20 hectares has been protected as an Aargau natural forest reserve since 2006. The forest is still partly managed.
The Gippinger Grien forms a habitat connected with the Aare for water birds, amphibians , fish, insects and beavers . The floodplain landscape with its different landscape sections has a diverse vegetation. The occurrence of the water feather Hottonia palustris is very rare in Switzerland.
The southern boundary of the nature reserve is on the edge of the Gippingen settlement. The regional wastewater treatment plant is partly located in the nature reserve. In their immediate vicinity, the Leuggernbach flows into the nature reserve and the Aare. To the east of Gippingen, the short inland canal on the left flows into the Leuggernbach next to the dam.
