GippsAero (formerly Gippsland Aeronautics) is an Australian aircraft manufacturer . The company builds single-engine aircraft and is part of Mahindra Aerospace , part of the Indian conglomerate Mahindra Group .
history
Gippsland Aeronautics was founded by Peter Furlong and George Morgan and started operations at the Latrobe Regional Airport in Morwell in the 1970s as an aircraft maintenance and conversion company. The company worked for large organizations such as the National Safety Council of Australia and Esso Australia, as well as local commercial air service providers. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Peter Furlong and John Brown were pilots, aircraft designers, fabricators, and maintenance personnel for the Latrobe Valley Aircraft Club and the Ultra Light Club of Australia .
After nearly two decades of aircraft maintenance and conversion experience, they decided to design their own aircraft. The result was the Gippsland GA200 , an agricultural aircraft based on the Piper PA-25 . Other aircraft models followed.
In 2008 GippsAero acquired the production rights to the GAF Nomad , which was built until 1988, and intends to revise the design and produce it as GA18 from 2015.
In December 2009 the Mahindra Group took over 75.1% of the shares.
