In Shanghai living Kei Narutani and his girlfriend are both Minghua evacuated from China to Japan, is attacked as the city of the Zai. During their escape by sea, several Zai fighters sink the evacuation fleet. Kei sees the Zai shoot down a strange plane. When the plane then crashes, Kei swims to the crashed plane to help the pilot. However, he is surprised to find a girl behind the wheel.

Upon arriving in Japan, Kei begins investigating the origins of the strange airplane and is soon captured by Japanese intelligence agents. He learns from them that it was a Swedish hunter who had been retrofitted with a special technology developed by JASDF . In order to fight the Zai, their technologies - HiMAT (Highly Maneuverable Aircraft Technology) and EPCM (Electronic Perceptory Countermeasures) - were modeled and applied to existing combat models, which are codenamed "Daughters". But in order to function properly, this technology needs an autonomous interface unit called “anima”: android-shaped human-like girls made from salvaged Zai parts. The girl Kei met by the name Gripen (after the plane she flies) is one such anima unit. Gripen formed an emotional bond with him as he rushed to her aid. When their lead developer notices this effect, he invites Kei to join the Anima project. From then on, Kei acts as Gripen's partner to increase her flight performance and prevent her from being scrapped.

Characters

Kei Narutani

A Sino-Japanese teenager who lived in Shanghai before being evacuated due to a Zai attack. After seeing how Gripen fought two Zai fighters and then crashing into the sea, he impulsively comes to her aid, creating an emotional bond between them. Like his mother, an airshow pilot who was killed in a Zai ambush, he decides to join the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. After being initiated into the Anima project, he becomes Gripen's weapons systems officer and emotional anchor.

Grip

A pink haired anima unit that flies a Swedish JAS 39D Gripen from Saab . She suffers from an inherent emotional defect that disperses her and leaves her without purpose. Gripen has an emotional dependence on kei. This is noticed by her supervisor and Kei is accepted into the program to give her motivation to fight the Zai. Her callsign is "Barbie 01".

eagle

A blonde Anima that an F-15J Eagle of McDonnell Douglas flies. She has a cheeky and moody personality and is a talented fighter pilot. Right after meeting Kei, she becomes very interested in him. She worships Yashirodōri as a father. Your callsign is "Barbie 02"

phantom

An anima with the callsign "Barbie 03" arriving in Komatsu separately from Gripen and Eagle. She flies an F-4 Phantom II and is the first anima created by the JSDF. Though trained for combat, her specialty is tactical reconnaissance; For this reason, it can also communicate with the anima information channels in order to obtain or manipulate information. Due to her status as the first anima and the independence that was imposed on her when it was assumed that no other anima would be created, she is very condescending towards her colleagues and causes friction in the team. After Kei saved her from a difficult situation shortly after their arrival, she falls in love with him. As a hobby, she usually colors her hair in shades of green.

Viper Zero

Another anima with the callsign "Barbie 04". She flies a Mitsubishi F-2 . Their actual appearance is unknown as every viewer who sees them sees a picture of the person they are thinking about most at the moment. This effect occurs due to the instability of their central core, which acts as an empathic reflector. She also likes to dress in Lolita fashion.

Rhino

The only American anima. Her callsign is "Sapphire 01". Her will and consciousness are taken over by the Zai when she is lured into a Zai trap along with Kei and Gripen and becomes the first anima to be corrupted and destroyed.

Minghua Song

Kei's energetic childhood Chinese friend who lost her parents during the chaotic evacuation of Shanghai. She is in love with Kei and considers herself his girlfriend; Since she has never told him about her feelings, he only sees her as an older sister.

Haruka Yashirodōri

The leading JASDF scientist behind the reverse engineering of the Zai weapons and the developer of the Anima system. Because of the emotional effect kei has on Gripen, he constantly calls it ōji-sama. Despite his harsh demeanor, he looks after his creations like a father.

William Shankle

An American scientist in charge of Rhino; His specialty is AI and he develops drone fighters based on Anima flight and combat data.

Funato

A JASDF engineer working under Yashirodōri.

Kei and his friend Minghua are Chinese refugees who are fleeing to Japan to escape an unknown and highly developed alien force called "Xi". Several Xi planes arrive and attack the ship that Kei and Minghua are on. However, they are saved by the intervention of a state-of-the-art aircraft that resembles a JAS 39E / F Gripen. The Gripen crashes into the water after the Xi retreat and Kei swims over to save the pilot. The pilot is a mysterious girl who kisses him when she saw him. The Japan Air Self Defense Force retrieves the Gripen and Kei and Minghua arrive safely in Japan, where they live in Kei's grandfather's house. Kei is fascinated by Gripen and wants revenge on the Xi for killing his mother. He goes to a nearby JASDF base to see if the Gripen has landed there. Minghua follows and both are captured by base security. Inside, Kei meets Haruka Yashirodōri, who reveals to him that the JASDF has developed advanced fighters called "Daughters" who are able to overcome the technological advantage of the Xi and are controlled by special units called "Anima". He goes on to reveal that for some reason Gripen seems to be reacting positively to Kei's presence, and he offers Kei the opportunity to join his team and help fight the Xi.

Kei also notices a strong dislike of the JASDF staff for the Anima. The next day, Gripen Kei goes to his house to make an appointment. In this course, she reveals that she suffers from an unknown defect that leaves her with no clear purpose in existence and frequent failures during her missions. They spend the rest of the day doing leisure activities until Gripen inexplicably collapses and is immediately picked up by Yashirodōri's staff for repairs. Yashirodōri tells Kei that Gripen usually collapses (i.e., falls asleep) after just three hours, but that day her cycle of activity was significantly lengthened, and expresses the hope that Kei's presence will positively affect her during her test flight in a week, because otherwise will it was declared a depreciation prototype and scrapped.

When Gripen performed poorly during a test simulation, Kei was allowed to take control of a "doughter" for the first time. As the critical test flight approaches, Yashirodōri discovers that Gripen's brainwaves synchronized when she first met Keis and that her internal stability depends heavily on his closeness to her. However, upon encountering antipathetic JASDF members, Kei learns that Anima was created using salvaged Xi technology, creating an emotional conflict within him. On the day of the test flight, however, he receives a message from Gripen that she knows about her Zai origins, but has decided to fight for the sake of humanity. Kei decides he can't leave her and runs to Komatsu to take part in her test flight. However, Gripen suffers another breakdown and a Zai fighter attacks unexpectedly. But before Gripen is shot down, another anima - Eagle - intervenes and defeats the enemy.

Shortly after Eagle arrives in Komatsu, she storms in the middle of a date between Kei and Minghua. After learning from her that Gripen will be scrapped that same day, he rushes back to the airbase and seeks out Gripen to assure her that he will take care of her. Just before he can dissuade her from her impending fate, a massive Xi attack force approaches Japan. With Eagle alone outnumbered, defeat seems assured. Despite Yashirodōri's willingness to allow Gripen and Kei to overflow, Gripen and Kei decide to ascend together. Gripen's initial failure to get in touch with her fighter forces Kei to take control, and after he manages to shoot down an Xi fighter, Gripen's confidence is boosted so that she can step into the fight herself. The enemy force is defeated, and Kei somehow manages to connect to the controls of the aircraft like an anima.
