Girolamo Germano , lat. Hieronymus Germanus , French Jérôme Germano (* 1568 in Palermo ; † December 27, 1632 ibid) was an Italian Jesuit and modern Greek philologist.

Life

Little is known about Germano. He was inducted into the Order in 1586 at the age of 18. He taught ancient languages ​​and literature in the Order for eight years before being sent to the island of Chios , where Jesuits had settled since the 1590s. There he worked in pastoral care for 22 years. With this in mind, he wrote a Vocabolario italiano et greco , which he preceded by a modern Greek grammar . The work is significant in phonetic , morphological and lexicographical terms, but was up to the reprint given by Hubert Pernottogether with a detailed introduction to the history of modern Greek grammar and lexicography up to the 19th century, can only be found in very few libraries. Germano is one of the neo-Greek philologists of the early modern period .
