Gisulf II (Friuli)
Gisulf II of Friuli was a dux of the Longobards in the Friuli area . He fell in battle around the year 610 when the Avars invaded Friuli. His wife Romhilda , daughter of Duke Garibald I von Baiern and von Walderada , daughter of the Lombard king Wacho , looked for Forum Iulii with her sonsProtection. The city was then taken by the Avars, supposedly because Romhilda, blinded by the beauty of the young Avar ruler, opened the gates. The men of the city were killed, the women and children kidnapped. The sons of Gisulf were able to escape. The events are narrated by Paulus Deaconus , who, however, was not a contemporary of Gisulf. Why the Avars attacked the Lombards, with whom they were usually on good terms, is unclear. This and the fact that the then Longobard king Agilulf apparently did not provide any help suggest that the Avars acted against Gisulf on his behalf.
Two of Gisulf's sons, Raduald and Grimoald, were successively Duke of Benevento . Grimoald even became king of the Lombards in 662.
