Gitega (formerly Kitega ) is the capital and second largest city of the East African state of Burundi and the capital of the province of Gitega , one of the country's seventeen provinces. Gitega was the capital ( royal city ) of the former Kingdom of Burundi , the predecessor of today's Republic of Burundi and replaced Bujumbura as the country's capital on January 16, 2019 by a parliamentary decision.

Gitega had a population of 41,944 at the 2008 census. The city is located about 60 km east of the largest city Bujumbura at an altitude of 1725  m on the Luvironza River , one of the headwaters of the Nile . Until the outbreak of ethnic conflicts in 1972, Gitega was the residence of the kings of the Batusi ( Tutsi ).

Gitega is located in the center of Burundi, is an important trade center in the country and an important road junction. The Burundi National Museum is located in Gitega .

Gitega is also the seat of a Catholic archdiocese , which has a partnership with the German diocese of Eichstätt .

In December 2018, the Burundian government decided to move the country's political capital from Bujumbura to Gitega.
