Giuli Alassania ( Georgian გიული ალასანია ; born November 11, 1946 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian historian. The professor teaches oriental history at Tbilisi State University . She is the mother of Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili .

Life

She was born the daughter of the medicin Mzia Tsereteli, who was descended from the royal family of the Bagratids in Georgia. Her brother is Temur Alassania, owner of the Madneuli JSC mining company.

She heads the Source Studies Department of the Institute of History and Ethnography at the Georgian Academy of Sciences and has authored over 90 publications, including six books on various issues in the history of Georgia and Georgian-Turkish relations.

At the university, she conducts seminars on the history of Georgia, the Middle East and Turkey, is an editorial member of the journal Central Asia and the Caucasus, published by the Swedish Center for Social and Political Studies , and the journal Dialog Avrazia , published in Istanbul .

Since March 2005 Alassania has been the chairman of the board of trustees of the Georgian University of Social Sciences , which aims to train the next generation for an administration, economy and media organized according to western standards.

She is also head of research at the Georgian office of the Trans National Crime and Corruption Center of the American University in Georgia ( TraCCC-Go ), which deals with the academic analysis of organized crime and corruption in Georgia. Under her guidance, analyzes and strategy papers on the energy and transport sector , smuggling , universities and human trafficking are prepared. Alassania also decides on the award of scholarships .

She was Vice Rector of the Black Sea International University in Tbilisi, which promotes Georgian-Turkish student exchanges. In 1996 she conducted research in the USA as part of a study program .

Alassania is chair of the organization Georgian Diaspora - Bridge to the World .

Personal

She is married to the doctor Nikolos Saakashvili and has three sons, Giorgi, Nikolos and Micheil . The latter was President of Georgia from 2004 to 2013.
