Giuliana Fiorentino Tedeschi

Giuliana Fiorentino Tedeschi , also Giuliana Tedeschi Brunelli, (born April 9, 1914 in Milan , † June 28, 2010 in Turin ) was an Italian Holocaust survivor.

Life

Giuliana Fiorentino grew up in a Jewish family in Naples, where her father worked as a pharmaceutical salesman. She studied linguistics with Benvenuto Terracini at the University of Milan and received the laureate in 1936. The Italian race laws passed in 1938 prevented her further career path. She married the architect Giorgio Tedeschi in 1939 and they moved to Turin where they had two children. The couple was arrested in the Italian Social Republic on March 8, 1944, and the young children were hidden by a domestic worker. On April 5, 1944, they were deported from the Fossoli transit camp to Auschwitz in a collective transport . When the Auschwitz concentration camp was dissolved, Giorgio Tedeschi died on a death march on January 25, 1925 , and a brother and sister were also victims of the Holocaust. Giuliana Tedeschi ended up in the Ravensbrück concentration camp . She was liberated on April 22, 1945 on another evacuation march.

Back in Italy, she reunited with her children. In 1946 she published one of the first eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust in Italian under the title Questo povero corpo . Giuliana Tedeschi Brunelli worked as a teacher in Turin and wrote several language textbooks. In 1988 she wrote a second book about her concentration camp imprisonment. In 2002 her first book was reprinted. Daniela Padoan published interviews with her, Goti Bauer and Liliana Segre in 2004 .
