Giuseppe Dessì

Giuseppe Dessì (* 7. August 1909 in Villacidro , Sardinia , † 6. July 1977 in Rome ) was an Italian writer , in 1972 for his novel Paese d'Ombre (1972) the Premio Strega had received and after the Premio Dessì named is.

Life

After attending school, Dessì studied literature at the University of Pisa , which he graduated in 1936. He then worked as a teacher and as an employee of the school administration.

He made his writing debut in 1939 with the novel La sposa in città , which was followed by numerous other novels. Some of his works were published in German-language translation as The Ransom (1962) after the Premio Bagutta winning novel Il disertore of Herbert Meier , which is also in the 1969 spectrum-book series in the publishing house people and world was issued. For his book Paese d'Ombre , published in 1972 , Dessì, who had been seriously ill since 1964, received the prestigious Premio Strega literary prize in 1972 .

In his novels and stories , he combined reality and fiction with his own memories to create autobiographical stories with a retrospective reminiscent of Marcel Proust . The characters appearing in his works tend to dissolve their identities in a mythical atmosphere, alluding to a secret life, and eager to dissolve their freedom and innocence tainted by feelings, legacies or sins. Through his works he also influenced the work of writers such as Giulio Angioni and Salvatore Satta .

In addition to his literary work, Dessì also worked as a documentary filmmaker , and among other things, shot a documentary about Sardinia in 1963 for the television station Radiotelevisione Italiana with the title La Sardegna: un itinerario nel tempo .

The Giuseppe Dessì literary prize, the Premio Dessì, was named after him and was awarded by the Fondazione Dessì to Sergio Romano in 2004 and to Rodolfo Sacchettini in 2007 .
