Giuseppe Gargani (born April 23, 1935 in Morra De Sanctis ) is an Italian lawyer and politician of the Unione di Centro (UdC) and has been a member of the European Parliament since June 6, 2011 . Previously, he was a member of the Italian parliament for the Christian democratic Democrazia Cristiana and from 1999 to 2009 a member of the European Parliament for the right-wing conservative Forza Italia and its successor party Popolo della Libertà .

Life

During his law studies Gargani joined the Christian Democratic party Democrazia Cristiana (DC) in 1956 , in which he held various party offices. Among other things, he was DC regional secretary for Campania as well as a member of the party executive committee and spokesman for judicial matters. From 1970 to 1972 Gargani was president of the province of Avellino , from 1972 to 1994 he was a member of the Italian parliament , where he was elected chairman of the legal committee several times. 1979 to 1984 he was also State Secretary in the Italian Ministry of Justice.

After the dissolution of the DC and the founding of the new Forza Italia party under Silvio Berlusconi in 1994, Gargani joined this and from 2001 headed the party's justice department. In 2009 Forza Italia finally merged into the newly founded Popolo della Libertà .

In the European elections of 1999 he became the European Parliament voted, where he board member of the Group EPP-ED was. In addition, he was initially chairman of the culture committee until 2002 , from 2002 chairman of the committee for law and the internal market (from the 2004 European elections only legal committee ).

In the European elections in Italy in 2009 , in which Gargani stood on the PdL list, he would have won another seat in parliament within his constituency of southern Italy according to his number of preferential votes . However, voter turnout in southern Italy was significantly lower than in other regions, so that the Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni ordered that five mandates that were actually due to the constituencies of southern Italy and the Italian islands should be transferred to central and northern Italian constituencies. As a result, instead of Gargani, Giovanni Collino moved into parliament, who had also stood for the PdL, but then joined the Futuro e Libertà per l'Italia . Gargani sued this decision and was also supported by the Consiglio di Stato . At the beginning of June 2011, the Corte Suprema di Cassazione Gargani was right, so that he could resume his mandate as a MEP.

A year earlier, in March 2010, Gargani had left the PdL in order to found his own political group called EuropaSud . In May 2010 he joined the Unione di Centro with this .
