Giuseppe Sacconi

Giuseppe Sacconi (born July 5, 1854 in Montalto delle Marche , † July 23, 1905 in Collegigliato, Pistoia ) was an Italian architect.

Sacconi played a major role in the redesign of Piazza Venezia in the center of Rome at the end of the 19th century. Here are also his most important works, including his most famous work, the Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II . In 1884 he won the design competition and began construction the following year, which was not completed until a few years after his death. The monument was considered very controversial at the time. During the fascist era, the monument became the main site of Mussolini's regime. This contributed significantly to the monument's general downgrading. More recently it has been shown that work is more respectful. The Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali was also built according to his plans and today stands opposite his model, the Palazzo Venezia .

He also worked on the restoration of the Church of Santa Maria di Loreto , which is also located near Piazza Venezia. Here he wanted to remove all baroque and other changes and restore the original shape of the entire building. He also designed the Cappella Espiatoria ( Atonement Chapel ) in Monza until he died at the age of 51 in Collegigliato, Pistoia .
