Giuseppe Sanmartino (* 1720 in Naples ; † 1793 there ) was an Italian sculptor and an important representative of the Neapolitan Rococo .

life and work

Sanmartino was a student of Matteo Bottiglieri (1684–1757). From 1749 he worked under the master masters Francesco Queirolo (1704–1762) from Genoa and Antonio Corradini on the interior of the Cappella Sansevero in Naples. Corradini died during the work in 1752 but left 36 terracotta models. Based on this legacy, Sanmartino created the "Veiled Body of Christ" ( Cristo velato ), the so-called "Pietella" marble, in 1753. The Veiled Christ is one of the greatest masterpieces of late baroque sculpture. The grandiose formation of the folds on the corpse of the Savior, the inclined head of Christ resting on two pillows and the crown of thorns on his feet form an impressive overall composition.

In addition to a large number of nativity figures - all for Neapolitan churches - Sanmartino also created other marble sculptures:

  • Decoration, Santissima Annunziata Church
  • High altar of the Nunziatella Church
  • St. Augustine group, Church of Sant'Agostino alla Zecca
  • High altar, Church of San Lorenzo in San Severo
  • Angel chandeliers and sculptures of the facade, Girolamini Church
  • Monument to Philip, the son of Charles de Bourbon, Basilica of Santa Chiara

Some of his works are also exhibited in the crib museum of the Certosa di San Martino in Naples.
