The Chiesa della Nunziatella is a small baroque church in Naples in the street of the same name, the via Nunziatella. It is dedicated to the Annunciation and its full name is Chiesa della Santissima Annunziata , but to distinguish it from the great Church of Santissima Annunziata Maggiore , it is generally called in diminutive or diminutive form: Annunziatella or Nunziatella . Since the late 18th century it has belonged to a military school, the Scuola militare Nunziatella, named after it .

history

The church was originally donated in 1588 by the noblewoman Anna Mendozza Marchesana della Valle, who subsequently gave it to the Jesuits . They opened an associated novitiate on the hill of Pizzofalcone and, starting in 1713, initiated a thorough renovation and modernization of the buildings.

The church received its current, late baroque appearance in 1736 by the architect Ferdinando Sanfelice .

When the Jesuits were expelled in 1773, the building complex initially came into the hands of the Padri Somaschi , who founded a college for the sons of the Knights of Malta . In the following year, however, the Somaskans had to move to Gesù Vecchio , and King Ferdinand I opened the Royal Military College ( Real Collegio Militare ) in the building, which was incorporated into the still existing Scuola Militare Nunziatella in 1787. The "Nunziatella" church functioned from then on as the chapel of the military school.

description

The interior

The facade is structured by subtle decorative shapes and smooth pilasters , the capitals of which correspond to the Ionic order below and the composite order above . Its middle part is slightly arched forward and is clearly accentuated by the elegant portal made of white marble and the single large window above it, as well as by the ornamental course of the roof.

The interior consists of a single nave with two chapels on either side and no transept. It is a jewel of the late baroque, with a very beautiful, precious multicolored marble decoration in the typical Neapolitan style and with high quality rococo paintings , which together form a perfect whole. The unusually beautiful floor with ornaments made of marble inlay and red Cotto Tiles completes the overall picture.

The frescoed vaults were created by Francesco De Mura : the Assumption of Mary in the nave dates from its maturity in 1751. Around the corners you can see a series of virtues in the grisaille technique. The Adoration of the Magi in the apse originated almost 20 years earlier and was dated 1732 by De Mura.

The three-part cycle of Mary on the walls of the apse is one of the main works by Ludovico Mazzanti , who surpassed himself here. The pictures show: in the middle above the altar the Annunciation , on the left the visitation , and on the right the birth of Jesus . Mazzanti also painted the four saints on the entrance facade ( St. Peter, Paul, San Francesco Regis and San Francesco Borgia ). The angel figures around the main altar were created by Giuseppe Sanmartino in 1756–57, probably based on original designs by Sanfelice.

The two left side chapels are dedicated to the Jesuit saints Franz Xavier and Ignatius . The altarpieces are again by Francesco De Mura, the other paintings on the side walls and ceilings were created by Giuseppe Mastroleo .

The first chapel on the right is dedicated to the Passion of Christ and has a corresponding cycle of paintings; the crucifixion on the main altar is the work of Ludovico Mazzanti; the Lamentation of Christ was painted by Pacecco de Rosa in 1646 (signed and dated). The white marble tomb of Don Giovanni Assenzio Goyzueta (died 1783) was created by Salvatore Di Franco, a student of Giuseppe Sammartino.

This is followed on the same side by the chapel of St. Stanislaus Kotska , who can also be seen in the paintings. The altarpiece by Paolo De Matteis shows the saint together with the ascending Madonna. The two side pictures are again by Ludovico Mazzanti and the dome frescoes by Giuseppe Mastroleo.
