The Shining Stängelrüssler ( Lixus subtilis ) is a beetle from the family of weevils (Curculionidae).

features

The elongated slender beetles are between 7 and 9 mm long. Her body is covered with fine yellow hairs. The flat eyes protrude little or no. The front edge of the pronotum is flat behind the eyes.

distribution

The species occurs in Central and Eastern Europe. They occur in the west as far as Germany, Austria and Italy, in the north as far as southern Sweden. In the east the distribution area extends over Eastern Europe (Poland to Bulgaria) to the Middle East . In Central Europe, the species occurs mainly in warm areas and is very rare overall.

Way of life

The beetles appear from April. You can watch them until summer. After mating, the eggs are laid on the stems of the host plants. The host plants include various representatives of the foxtail family (Amaranthaceae), including bent-back amaranth ( Amaranthus retroflexus ), glossy melde ( Atriplex sagittata ), turnip ( Beta vulgaris ), white ( Chenopodium album ) and stinking goosefoot ( Chenopodium vulvaria ) and spinach ( Spinacia ). The larva develops in the stem. The pupation takes place in the root collar instead.
