The glass assembly and application company (GMAB) based in Stützerbach (from 1977 in Ilmenau ) in Thuringia was founded in 1973 as a company of the VEB Kombinat Technisches Glas Ilmenau . It emerged from a craft production cooperative (PGH). This was founded after the Second World War by the glassblowers who remained in Stützerbach and continued the tradition of glass production that went back to 1648.

The task of the company, later the main department within the VEB Werk für Technisches Glas Ilmenau, was the implementation of glass pipelines made of borosilicate glass of the Rasotherm brand within the GDR economy. In the years from 1973 to 1990, these systems were offered in the nominal width range from DN 15 to DN 150 in flanged and welded versions (up to DN 100) as a complete service (project planning, delivery and installation). The welding of glass pipelines on a larger scale and under assembly conditions at the customer's was an absolute novelty at that time and also attracted the interest of the professional world at the corresponding trade fairs and exhibitions.

The areas of application included breweries , wineries , beverage companies, companies in the chemical industry, pharmaceutical companies, textile industry, dairy cattle facilities in agriculture and, last but not least, residential construction, where large amounts of glass pipes were used as hot water pipes in the prefabricated buildings .

After the political change in the GDR , the company, which was privatized in accordance with the Treuhandgesetz in 1990, only continued to exist for a few years and was finally demolished in 1995 by the Treuhandanstalt .
