Glen Mervyn

Glen Alexander Mervyn (born February 17, 1937 in Vancouver , † March 18, 2000 in Kelowna ) was a Canadian rower who won an Olympic silver medal in 1960.

The 1.93 m tall student from the University of British Columbia was successful on his university's boat and also competed internationally for Canada from 1958 to 1960. At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Cardiff in 1958 , he won with the Canadian eighth in the cast Archibald MacKinnon , Donald Arnold , Wayne Pretty , Glen Mervyn, Walter D'Hondt , Lorne Loomer , Robert Wilson , William McKerlich and helmsman Sohen Biln. Canada won 27 medals in Cardiff, the medal in eight was the only gold medal. In 1959, Mervyn and Biln were also part of the crew that won the silver medal in eighth at the 1959 Pan American Games .

At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, the Canadian eighth rowed Donald Arnold, Walter D'Hondt, Nelson Kuhn , John Lecky , Lorne Loomer, Archibald MacKinnon, William McKerlich, Glen Mervyn and Sohen Biln. In the final, the Germany eight won ahead of the Canadians and the boat from Czechoslovakia.

Mervyn ended his active career in 1960 and worked as a coach at the University of British Columbia and for the Canadian national team in the 1960s. He later completed a Masters Degree in Education from Harvard University and worked as a teacher of physics and mathematics. In 1992 he developed colon cancer and died after eight years of illness.
