Glenturret is a whiskey distillery at Crieff on the River Turret, Perthshire Scotland , UK . The distillery belongs to Lalique Group SA and claims to be the oldest still producing distillery in Scotland.

history

The distillery is one of the oldest in Scotland. Whiskey is said to have been illegally distilled here as early as 1717. Today's single malt distillery dates back to 1775. This date is also found on the single malts from the distillery sold today.

During the poor economic situation in the late 1830s, it remained the only one of the previously numerous distilleries on the Turret River. The renewed economic situation allowed the then owner Thomas Stewart to expand the distillery in 1870. The distillery stood still from 1929 to 1959. In 1957 she bought James Fairlie and started producing whiskey again in 1960. In 1981 Cointreau et Cie were added as investors, in 1990 the distillery was taken over by Highland Distillers , which in turn were taken over by the Edrington Group in 1999.

Glenturret is also known for the domestic cat Towser , which made it into the Guinness Book of Records : It reached an almost biblical age for cats of almost 24 years and allegedly killed 28,899 mice during this time. She died in 1987 and in 1991 a statue was erected in her honor at the distillery.

In December 2018 it was announced that the Edrington Group had sold the distillery.

production

The distillery, which is part of the Highlands region, comes from Loch Turret . The malt used comes from the malt house of the Tamdhu distillery. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash tun ) (11.4 t) made of wood, eight fermentation vats ( wash backs ) made of Douglas fir , a wash still (12,500 l) and a spirit still (9,000 l).

Sightseeing

Grouse statue

Glenturret has a well-developed visitor center and can be visited. In 1981 the Visitors Center opened as one of the first visitor centers in Scotland.

However, today the focus of the center is on the Famous Grouse products (blended whiskey) of the parent company (Grouse = Moorhuhn). This is why the visitor center is also called “The Famous Grouse Experience” and it shows all whiskeys that make up the “Famous Grouse” blend, including the better-known whiskey The Macallan (Speyside). The actual distillery's whiskey is mentioned in passing. The production facilities can be viewed in a tour, the second part of the tour (including the tasting) then deals with Famous Grouse.
