Riefensberg glacier cut
The natural monument Gletscherschliff Riefensberg is located in the municipality of Riefensberg in the anterior Bregenzerwald , Vorarlberg , Austria . This clearly visible glacier cut lies behind the sports field and was exposed in 1985 in the course of the gravel extraction . The greater part of it was destroyed before the glacial cut could be declared a natural monument.
Geology of the community of Riefensberg
Geologically, Riefensberg belongs to the Molasse zone, which consists of sandstone layers and Nagelfluh banks. The glacier cut located here was created (abraded) about 30,000 years ago during the last Ice Age ( Würme Ice Age ) by a side tongue of the Rhine glacier that entered via Alberschwende .
Because the Gletscherschliff carried under the tongue of the glacier, many meters high Moräneschutt (mostly sand and gravel) was hidden long it was before weathering protected. As a result of the exposure, the glacial cut is now slowly being destroyed. You can see how the clay-rich marl is already beginning to peel off.
