Bell tower (Wessobrunn)
The bell tower (also known as the Gray Duke or Roman Tower ) of the former monastery in Wessobrunn , a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau , was built in the middle of the 13th century. The bell tower at Klosterhof 8 is a protected architectural monument .
The massive tower made of tuff stone blocks also served as a defense tower and place of retreat in the event of danger. It was originally only accessible via a ladder. The ground floor was used as a prison at times .
In the course of secularization , the monastery was closed in 1803. From 1810 the monastery church was demolished due to its dilapidation . Only the tower remained, as the parish church of St. John Baptist next to it had no bells.
