Gloria film
The Gloria Film AG was a Swiss film production company based in Zurich . She was in the 1940s artistically and economically in the 1950s the greatest competitor of Praesens-Film .
history
Gloriafilm was founded in 1940 with the aim of producing high quality films in Switzerland. The first head of feature film production was Günther Stapenhorst . After the success of the first film, more ambitious film projects could be tackled. Stapenhorst saw the need to promote the next generation and gave young filmmakers the opportunity to make films. The critics praised people who pass by ... by Max Haufler and Steibruch by Sigfrit Steiner , but the production company was in dire straits due to the financial losses.
A reorganization of the company management and a redevelopment was necessary. Stapenhorst left Gloriafilm in 1943 and feature film production was discontinued. Production manager Heinrich Fueter shifted the activities of the film company to the less risky commissioned and documentary films. This allowed Haufler and Steiner to continue making films. Adolf Forter replaced Fueter in 1947.
Max Dora took over the overall management of Gloriafilm in 1947. Oscar Düby was entrusted with the film production. The Palace Hotel and The Venus of Tivoli were created under the direction of Leonard Steckel . A large number of local actors and guest stars from neighboring countries should guarantee success at home and abroad. The only moderate artistic success meant that Düby had to hand over the current production to Uli der Knecht to Dora. The unexpected success of this film encouraged the company's management to seek success in the domestic market. Two radio plays followed. Police Wäckerli and Oberstadtgass were created under the direction of Kurt Früh , and they hit the box office like a bomb. Gloriafilm became in-house director early on and in 1956 also took over the management of commissioned and documentary film production. Another great success came with the Zürrer bakery , which Früh was able to realize based on his own idea.
After the failure of Café Odeon , the long-standing main shareholder Hans M. Wettstein withdrew. Dora now teamed up with his competitor Lazar Wechsler from the Praesens, who joined Gloriafilm. The first successful film of this constellation was Behind the Seven Rails , but the sequel The Devil has a good laugh could no longer meet the financial expectations. The last three feature films were produced together with Praesens. Es Dach überem Chopf was able to bring in its costs , but the failure of Der 42. Himmel and Im Parterre links finally ended the feature film production of Gloriafilm. A few commercials were made until 1973.
