Oscar Düby
Oscar Düby (born December 21, 1904 in Schüpfen , † January 1, 1982 in Zurich ) was a Swiss lawyer , civil servant, film producer and production manager and film official.
Life
Born in the canton of Bern , Düby had worked as a lawyer after completing his law degree in 1929 and joined the Federal Foreigners Police in Bern in 1932 . From 1940 to 1943 he was head of the section in the field of care for emigrants and refugees. From 1943 until the end of the war in 1945 he served as an adjunct in federal finance. At that time, Düby was already committed to artist immigrants who had found refuge in Switzerland from the terror of German National Socialism, and in this role he also helped, for example, foreign ensemble members of the Zurich theater .
In Marie-Louise , a feature film with a humanitarian message made by the immigrant and Swiss-elect Leopold Lindtberg in 1943, Düby made his debut in film and served the producer Lazar Wechsler as one of two production managers. In 1946, Praesens boss Wechsler secured Dübys continuous cooperation and brought him to the board of directors of his company. In the same year, the Bern lawyer was hired by the Schauspielhaus in this very institution. “As a thank you, Wechsler enables him to fulfill a lifelong dream: to become a producer. Düby fulfills this function with very different skills, now with Praesens (1946–50, 1955–57), now with Gloriafilm (1951–54) and as an independent producer (Unitas-Film 1958/59). » In doing so, Oscar Düby proved to be a conservative filmmaker who was extremely distant from new trends in Swiss film and who only produced films with a very conventional concept. After all, he was able to achieve great box office and audience success with Franz Schnyder's Uli films Uli der Knecht and Uli der Pächter .
After his ultimate failure as an independent producer in 1959, Düby ended his active production activities and became a functionary: from 1959 to 1962 he was Secretary General of the Fédération Internationale des associations de producteurs de films and from 1962 to 1969 head of the film section in the EDI . In the latter function, Oscar Düby worked out a new federal film law in 1963. From 1969 to 1974 he was President of the Federal Film Commission.
Oscar Düby was married for the second time (since 1965) to the actress Stephanie Glaser , who had worked in the Uli films produced by Düby in the mid-1950s .
