Polizischt Wäckerli is a feature film by the director Kurt Früh with Schaggi Streuli in the lead role, produced in Switzerland by Gloriafilm in 1955 . In Germany, the film was dubbed under the title Live and let live .

action

The fifty-year-old police officer Gottfried Wäckerli from Allenwil has family worries: his son Ruedi is unhappy in his office apprenticeship and lives beyond his means. In addition, 10,000 francs have disappeared from the municipal treasury. Wäckerli's daughter Marti loves the milkman's assistant Hans Bader, who is suspected of stealing 50 francs from his master's cash register. Ruedi, for whom the distrust of his authoritarian father is becoming too much, leaves the family in an argument and travels to Zurich, where he can prove his graphic talent by furnishing the "Chérie Bar". A fraudster cheated on him for 3,000 francs that Ruedi borrowed from Häberli, the Allenwil community treasurer. Wäckerli exposes Häberli as a taxpayer thief and arrests him. Mary, the barmaid of the Chérie Bar, reconciles the Wäckerli family. Bader pays his old debt and then returns the stolen 50 francs to the milkman. Wäckerli turns a blind eye and overcomes his prejudices regarding the artistic abilities of his son Ruedi.

Emergence

The film is based on the 16-part radio play "Polizischt Wäckerli" by Radio Beromünster , for which Schaggi Streuli was responsible as the main actor and author of the play. Director Kurt Früh wanted his first feature film to be a box office hit and therefore contacted Streuli to make a film out of it five years after the radio play was first broadcast. The film was shot in Pfäffikon , the Horgen prison and the Niederdorf in Zurich , among others . The interior photos took place in the journeyman's house in Wolfbach. With more than 50,000 visitors in the first four weeks alone, the film was a financial success which, with production costs of 360,000 francs, brought in around 1,400,000 francs in the end.

criticism

The lexicon of international films saw a “dialect film and, in the broadest sense, Heimatfilm by Kurt Früh, which addresses the poetic and melancholy aspects of the petty bourgeoisie. Cheerful, contemplative and with a slight self-irony, the film is a forerunner of the stylized, ethnographically and socially critical homeland films by younger filmmakers. "
