Gluckenstein

The Gluckenstein is a cultural monument , a former boundary stone between Homburg and Kirdorf and possibly a prehistoric menhir in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . He is the namesake of the comprehensive school on Gluckenstein and the Gluckensteinweg in Bad Homburg.

description

At the beginning of the 20th century, the stone with a weight of about twelve hundred pounds was still in the open and towered two meters high. A first documented mention as a boundary stone between Kirdorf and Homburg comes from the year 1536. In the course of the 20th century Bad Homburg and Kirdorf grew closer and closer together and finally merged. The stone was filled in more and more as a result of the building work being carried out, and in 1954 it was only 1.45 meters high and in 1965 only 1.15 meters high. Today the stone lies in the middle of the buildings.

It is unclear whether it is actually a prehistoric menhir. In the area of the Vordertaunus there are finds of the megalithic culture . In terms of shape, it could be a menhir. However, there are no traces of processing. But it is also conceivable that it is a boulder .

In 2002 a sign was put up with the following information:

“Gluckenstein - more than 2 meters high, uncut quartzite block. Already mentioned in a document in 1536, the Gluckenstein stood as a boundary stone on the 'Hubweg' (now Gluckensteinweg) between the districts of Kirdorf and Homburg "

Surname

The name Gluckenstein can be traced back to the term menhir (menhir). Linguistically, the proximity to a Hünenstein is close. By shifting the sound slightly, the giant becomes a hen or a hen hatching eggs or a chick leading, a mother hen . The local history researcher Ernst Georg Steinmetz refers to the name of the nearby Glockenacker, the proceeds of which were used to pay the Kirdorfer bell ringer.
