The Gesamtschule am Gluckenstein ( GaG ) is a secondary school in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe , which is run as a cooperative comprehensive school under the auspices of the Hochtaunuskreis . The school is named after a boundary stone, the Gluckenstein , on the edge of the school grounds.

history

The school was opened in 1973 as the first cooperative comprehensive school . The opening in the traditionally conservative Bad Homburg was accompanied by fierce ideological debates about the concept of the comprehensive school . In May 1968, an “action group for the protection of parental rights” based in Bad Homburg had spoken out, from which in 1972 the “Hessian Parents Association”, also Bad Homburg, emerged, which distinguished itself as a fierce opponent of comprehensive school and support level.

The secondary school on Gymnasiumstraße had already moved into the new school building in the summer of 1972, followed by the secondary school students of the Friedrich-Ebert-Schule, and in August 1973 the secondary school branch was integrated with the support level. The new building, which was highly praised from an architectural point of view, turned out to be a permanent renovation with an air-conditioning system that was always vulnerable, a heating system that only warmed to twelve degrees and a flat roof that was leaky from the start. The long list of defects has still not been dealt with today. In addition, the school, which had been designed for 1,600 students, was soon overcrowded with 2,500 students, whereupon shift lessons were introduced.

In 1996 the Association of Friends and Sponsors of the GaG (Gesamtschule am Gluckenstein) e. V. founded.

At the end of the 1990s there were new debates about the type of school; the comprehensive school was to be converted into a Hauptschule and Realschule. Thousands of people protested against the separation of the grammar school branch and marched in front of the office of the then District Administrator Jürgen Banzer , who let himself be changed by the "example of lived democracy".

In 1996, pedagogical lunchtime care was introduced at the comprehensive school in order to take a step towards all-day school . In addition to warm meals, homework supervision and working groups, the offer at the comprehensive school was supplemented by a project and offers in playrooms and sports . Since the 2003/2004 school year, the afternoon program has been extended by an additional day.

In 2012 a new building was added to the old school building after political disputes delayed recognition as an all-day school and the construction of a building required for this. Since the 2011/2012 school year, the comprehensive school on Gluckenstein has been an open all-day school with permeable structures. In the new building there is a multifunctional cafeteria. The kitchen and social rooms, the upper floor, covered by a tent roof, offers space for four all-day rooms.

After water damage and the renovation of the school building, which had been overdue for years, students, teachers and parents tried to achieve an immediate renovation in spring 2012 with media-effective campaigns. District Administrator Ulrich Krebs promised extensive repairs, for which funds will not be available until 2015.

Educational offers

The pedagogical focus is on MINT , career orientation and social learning. Individual support is another hallmark of the comprehensive school.

Almost a third of the 800 students are of foreign origin. The school offers these students support measures. An intensive course is offered to students of every branch of school without knowledge of the German language . Furthermore, lessons are given in the languages of origin for Greeks , Italians , Croats , Serbs , Moroccans , Spaniards , Bosnians and Turks . The school offers ten different working groups.

Schoolchildren who have behavioral problems or who are tired of school are supported by the Association for the Promotion of Young People and Children in the District e. V. (JUKS), which was founded in December 1991. In addition, since the federal model project Die Kinder des Tantalus - integrative offers for school-weary young people, there has been a cooperation with the Bildungsstätte Alte Schule Anspach e. V. (BASA).

The comprehensive school at Gluckenstein offers student exchanges to France , Italy and Scotland . The partner school in France is the Collège Albert Camus in Eysines (suburb of Bordeaux ), in Italy with schools in Olbia and in Scotland in Ayr .

In grades 5 and 6 there is a class trip or a hiking week for five days. In the 7th, 8th and 9th grades, there is either an encounter trip with the partner schools in Greiz ( Thuringia ), Eysines (France), Olbia ( Sardinia , Italy) and Ayr (Scotland) or a ski course .

School branches

The comprehensive school comprises a high school branch (grades 5–10), a secondary school branch (grades 7–10), a secondary school branch (grades 7–9) and a special level (grades 5–6).

High school branch

The high school branch (grades 5–10) begins at the comprehensive school at Gluckenstein in grade 5 and ends after grade 10. The changeover from the nine-year (G9) to the eight-year high school (G8) took place in the 2006/2007 school year. For the school year 2008/2009, the comprehensive school at Gluckenstein decided to reintroduce the nine-year high school. English is offered as the first foreign language , i.e. in grade 5 . The compulsory elective subject in the high school branch is Business English in grades 9 and 10 .

Secondary school branch

The secondary school branch (grades 7-10) leads to middle school leaving certificate (Fachoberschulreife / Realschulabschluss) . French can be chosen instead of an elective subject. The internship in year 9 is compulsory.

Main school branch

The secondary school branch (grades 7–9) leads to the secondary school leaving certificate ( vocational school qualification ) . In grade 8, the main school students take part in a three-week internship. In the 9th grade you take part in a two-week block internship and a subsequent weekly practical day. The connection between school and the world of work has been strengthened through the establishment of practical classes since the 2004/2005 school year.

A so-called practical class in grade 7 has existed at the comprehensive school since the school year 2004/2005. This special class was set up in cooperation with the city of Bad Homburg and DB Training, the qualification provider of Deutsche Bahn AG . The pupils in this class receive targeted support and receive practical training. This ends with the secondary school leaving certificate.

Funding level

There are currently five parallel classes in the support level (grades 5–6). The subjects English and mathematics are taught in courses ( A , B and C ). The A course corresponds to the curriculum of the grammar school , the B course that of the Realschule and the latter that of the Hauptschule. The remedial level students can take part in additional remedial classes and homework supervision with lunch several times a week.

High school entrance class

In 2013, a grammar school entry class was introduced, in which the students have the opportunity to attend the grammar school branch from class 5.

The designation of the school classes consists of the year (5–10), the school branch (high school branch = 1; secondary school branch = 2; main school branch = 3; support level = F) and the class number (a, b etc.) (example: 9c2) .
