The Humboldt School (HUS) is next to the Kaiserin-Friedrich-Gymnasium (KFG) one of two high schools in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe . After Alexander (1769-1859) and Wilhelm von Humboldt named (1767-1835) school was as Municipal Higher girls' school founded in 1900 and is one of the largest schools of today Hochtaunuskreises grown. In the 2018/2019 school year, around 130 teachers teach around 1650 students. The Humboldt School has been working on the UNESCO school project since November 1995 ; since January 2000 it has been a recognized UNESCO project school .

Since September 1995 the Humboldt School has been striving for ecological and sustainable management. The focus was on international relations, ecology / natural sciences , new media in the classroom, bilingual classes (especially in French ) and the subjects of art , theater , music and sport . AbiBac , the Franco-German Abitur , has been available at the Humboldt School since 2019 .

history

Main entrance

The history of today's Humboldt School goes back to 1900. The school is the successor to the municipal high school for girls founded in 1900 . The school was later named Auguste Victoria School , named after the last German Empress Auguste Viktoria of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Augustenburg (1858–1921). After the Second World War , the educational facility was called Realgymnasium für Mädchen . In 1962 the school moved to Jacobistraße. Boys were admitted for the first time in 1967, so in 1968 - with the start of co-education  - the school was named Humboldt School . In 2003/2004 the school received the title school with a focus on music . At the end of 2005 the class wing and the administration building were largely renovated and modernized. A small cafeteria with 120 seats was also created. The shortened course (G8) was introduced in the 2005/2006 school year . With the 5th grade in the 2017/2018 school year, however, the Humboldt School returned to the Abitur after 13 years (G9).

Lessons and lunch care

The first lesson starts at 7:55 am; the last one ends at 6:00 p.m. Morning class ends at 1:05 p.m. The supervised lunch break, which has existed since the 2004/2005 school year, takes place between 13:05 and 13:50, during which a snack (kiosk) or lunch is offered in the school restaurant. The media center is also open during the lunch break . Afternoon classes take place two days a week from the sixth grade onwards.

Upper school

Performing games are offered from 10th to 12th grade as an alternative to art and music. In the tenth grade ( introductory phase ), lessons are already organized in courses . The Method Week project takes place in one of the first weeks of the introductory phase , in which the students learn important learning methods . A career information week takes place in the eleventh grade. Here the pupils receive information on choosing a career or course of study inside and outside the school. Furthermore, seminars are offered to acquire key qualifications.

Bilingual classes

French is in addition to English as the first foreign language offered with the election bid of bilingual education in the subject geography in the seventh and eighth grades. In the seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth grades as well as in the upper school, history is offered bilingually in French. Spanish is also offered as a second foreign language.

AbiBac

Since 2019, the Humboldt School has been one of around 90 German and eight Hessian schools at which AbiBac , the Franco-German Abitur , can be achieved. In connection with the AbiBac, the school is building a collaboration with the Lycée Montaigne in Paris .

Media center

School yard

The media center, the area is about 620 square meters, went from the libraries of the Central forth and college and was opened in the fall of 2004. It is open to students and teachers and offers the opportunity to prepare for and / or follow up on the lessons, to research and to chat. Around 4500 volumes, 500 English-language books, 250 French-language books, 8000 specialist books for the upper level, 475 lexicons and reference works are available in the center.

Awards

On October 24, 2008 the Humboldt School received the certificate “Environmental School - Learning and Acting for our Future” . The award was presented in Niederwalgern (municipality of Weimar (Lahn) ) by Environment Minister Wilhelm Dietzel .

On November 14, 2008, Ministerialrat Friedrich Janko from the Hessian Ministry of Culture presented the awards in the state-wide chemistry competition "Chemistry - join in!" In the Richard Küch Forum of Heraeus Holding GmbH in Hanau to Ninth and 10th grade students from Humboldt. They finished second and third in two rounds.

On December 9, 2008, an art course in the twelfth grade of the Humboldt School received first prize in the competition “New media yes - violence no!” For violence prevention in Hessian schools. The prize was awarded by Jürgen Banzer in the Hessian Ministry of Justice in Wiesbaden .

On March 12, 2009 it was announced that three students from the eighth to tenth grades of the Humboldt School in the experimental competition "Chemistry - join in!" (Topic: "Monopoly? - Mono Poly!" ) Took first place twice (state winner) and once have achieved second place.

The Humboldt School has had a partnership with the Mwanga High School in Tanzania since June 1996 . For this partnership, the school was on 10 December 2009 by the initiative " Germany - Land of Ideas " as a "Landmark" excellent.

The well-known former students include the journalist and RTL editor-in-chief Peter Kloeppel (* 1958), the computer scientist Arnold Willemer (* 1960), the dressage rider Sven Rothenberger (* 1966) and the model Kim Hnizdo (* 1996). The current student at HUS is Mariel Kirschall, known from the 9th season of The Voice of Germany .
