Gnadenhutten is a parish on the Tuscarawas River in Tuscarawas County , Ohio , United States . According to the 2000 census, the population was 1,280. Gnadenhutten is the oldest surviving village in Ohio. It was founded by David Zeisberger around 1772 and rebuilt in 1798 after it was destroyed in the Gnadenhütten massacre in 1782 by John Heckewelder .

The place was founded as Gnadenhütten like the village of the same name Gnadenhütten in Pennsylvania, which was the victim of the first Gnadenhütten massacre in 1755, as a settlement of the German Moravian Brethren . Lenni-Lenape - Indians joined. This community remained neutral during the American Revolutionary War , but ninety-six of them were butchered by American revolutionaries in the Gnadenhütten massacre of 1782.

In 1872 a monument was erected next to log cabins in the original style in the center of the former Indian village.

Demographics

According to the census in 2000 , 1,280 people lived in Gnadenhutten. 4 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 513 households and 377 families. The population density was 208 inhabitants per square kilometer. 539 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 99.5 percent white population and 0.1 percent African American; 0.5 percent said they came from several races. 0.2 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 513 households, 30.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 62.8 percent were married couples living together, 7.6 percent were single mothers, and 26.5 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent were single households and 14.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.94.

The population was distributed among 23.8 percent under 18 years of age, 8.9 percent from 18 to 24 years, 26.5 percent from 25 to 44 years, 21.5 percent from 45 to 64 years and 19.4 percent from 65 years or older. The mean age ( median ) was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 86.9 males and for every 100 adult females aged 18 and over there were 83.8 males.

The median income for a household (median) was 34 286  US $ , and the median income for a family $ 38,000. Males had a median income of $ 32,026 and females $ 20,526. The per capita income was $ 15,961. 9.3 percent of families and 8.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
