history

Glenford became the capital of Hopewell Township when the Newark, Somerset and Straitsville Railroad was built in 1871 and opened a station here. This enabled goods such as wheat and corn, but also products from the quarries such as sandstone, lime and silicate stone for glass production to be transported to Newark or Shawnee .

Two railway connections, the Zanesville and Western Railway and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B & O) with two adjacent station buildings later passed through the town .

Hopewell culture

On a hill very near Glenford, the remains of an Indian culture have been found that dates back to 300 BC. It existed in a large area between New York and Missouri and from Wisconsin to Mississippi , but also along the coast of Lake Ontario in Canada . However, its core area is in central Ohio. The culture stage got the name Hopewell culture after its place of discovery, in Hopewell Township .

In addition to various burial mounds and earthworks, the complex at Glenford, which is made entirely of stone, is particularly significant. It covers an area of around ten hectares. The walls must originally have been three meters high. In the center of the facility is a cairn 30 meters in diameter and more than three meters high. Nearby is Wilson Mound , another burial mound, and east of Glenford is Roberts Mound, eight meters high and 36 meters in diameter. A circle 195 meters in circumference has been found south of Glenford depicting a giant bird with its wings outspread.
