Gneus (Slavs)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gneus was a West Slavic prince in Mecklenburg or Ostholstein in 1036.

He was the leader of a tribe of the Elbe Slavs in the sphere of influence of the Duchy of Saxony . He was mentioned in 1036 when he appeared with Prince Anadrog as a vassal in Hamburg to Duke Bernhard II of Saxony . No further information about him has come down to us.

It has been assumed that the mention of Gneus by Adam von Bremen is only about the final syllable -gnew of a mutilated name and that this refers to Pribignew, which was handed down in Saxo Grammaticus and was called Uto (Udo) by Adam after his Christian baptismal name .
