Gnomon Island (also The Gnomon ) is a small, rocky and towering island in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It is located immediately north of Point Wild off the north coast of Elephant Island .

Participants in the endurance expedition (1914-1917) of the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton named them. It is named after its resemblance to the upright shadow pointer ( gnomon ) of a sundial .
