The origins of Goßmannsdorf am Main are largely in the dark. Goßmannsdorf is mentioned for the first time around 840 in old records. Old name variants are also Gotzbaldesdorf, Gozboldesdorf or similar (after the oldest landlord Gotzbald).

From the 14th to the 19th century, the place had a closed village fortification, which consisted of a curtain wall with three large and seven small towers. It is only partially preserved in its old height.

In 1765 the first synagogue was built in Goßmannsdorf / Main. There is evidence that Jews have lived in the village since 1510.

In 1815 Goßmannsdorf came to Bavaria , the mayor's office was dissolved and from then on the citizens elected a mayor. Before that, Messrs. Zobel , von Geyer and the Würzburg Cathedral Chapter had shared the property of the village.

In 1972 the Goßmannsdorfer decided in a citizen survey on the occasion of the upcoming regional reform for a merger with Ochsenfurt. The incorporation resolution was passed in February 1972 by the local council with 10: 0 votes. Centuries of independence came to an end.

War events

In 1525 the inhabitants of Goßmannsdorf also took part in the Peasants' War . During the Thirty Years War Goßmannsdorf was ravaged by the plague ; it is said to have carried away all but twenty people. In 1673 the French camped nearby burned half the village. In the First World War, the community had 24 dead. 59 Goßmannsdorfer died in the Second World War. At the end of the war, when captured by American troops, the village was spared combat operations and damage. Many refugees and homeless people stayed in Goßmannsdorf.

economy

Until well into the 19th century, agriculture, viticulture and the demolition of natural stone were predominant. Shipping on the Main also played a significant role for the town: Grain from the Ochsenfurt Gau was loaded onto ships in Goßmannsdorf and brought to Würzburg, for example.

traffic

Goßmannsdorf has a stop on the Treuchtlingen – Würzburg railway line and is therefore well connected to the rail network. With the regional train the journey time is three minutes to Ochsenfurt and 15 minutes to Würzburg main station .

In June 2013, the new bypass was opened, which cost a total of almost 25 million euros.

Until then, however, the traffic situation was neither ideal for the residents of Zehnthofstrasse nor for drivers, because this road, which drivers coming from Winterhausen or Ochsenfurt take, is very narrow and winding and leads directly through the old town. The traffic load in the town center was therefore high for decades. From December 2009, the new Main Bridge Goßmannsdorf relieved the inner city of through traffic at the exit towards Ochsenfurt .

In Goßmannsdorf there is also the "Liederkranz" (choral society), the music society and the carnival society "Krackenblitze", which organizes self-designed ceremonial meetings and a carnival parade.

Village renewal

In order to revive the infrastructure in Goßmannsdorf and to counteract rural exodus, the state-sponsored process of village renewal has been running since December 2013. It was initiated in 2006 by local residents. From 2010 to 2013 there were four working groups with a total of around 20 active people who pushed this process forward under the direction of the Office for Rural Development Lower Franconia (seat: Würzburg). In December 2013, this office officially ordered the village renewal in Goßmannsdorf. From now on, a community of participants will be in charge of ensuring that the projects planned in recent years are implemented. The community of participants is a corporation under public law, whose board is elected from parts of the population and which leads the implementation of the steps set out in the village renewal plan.

population

In line with the general development, the number of inhabitants in Goßmannsdorf has decreased slightly in recent years from 1090 in 1999 to 1009 in 2011.
