Former mill building of the Mönchsmühle

The Mönchsmühle was an overshot watermill on the Schunter in Räbke in the Helmstedt district . Because of its island location between two Schunter streams it was also called Inselmühle , after previous owners also Angersteinsche Wassermühle and Vahldieksche Mühle .

description

According to the document book of the Halberstadt Monastery , the land for the construction of the mill was given to monks of the Mariental Monastery by Halberstadt Bishop Konrad in 1205 . The Mönchsmühle could be the oldest mill in Räbke, as the Prinzhorn mill was built by monks in 1228 according to research by Räbker local historian Franz Löding and the Liesebach watermill was founded in 1236.

The Mönchsmühle used to be part of an agricultural farm, as traditionally it is listed as a row farm the size of a half- horse farm . In 1613 Viktor Gebhards and Cort Steinmann are named as owners, although the name remained until 1754.

The mill is shown on a map of Räbke and the surrounding area made as part of the Braunschweig General Land Survey of 1754. At the time, almost 570 people lived in the village's 84 residential buildings.

In 1902 the master saddler Wilhelm Vahldiek acquired the property with the farm and mill from the owner at the time, Bertram, in order to set up a saddlery with upholstery . The arable land belonging to the farm was given up and the mill was stopped. As a sideline, the master saddler Wilhelm Vahldiek used the water mill to grind grain and chopped straw. In 1935, the former Mühlenhof took over arable land again, which was divided up by Warberg Castle , and converted into a farm through stable conversions.

According to the Räbker mill register from 1939, the mill was in operation at the time and had an additional motor to drive it. It processes up to 600 quintals of grist every year , brought in and picked up by customers.

The rights to the mill were ceded in 1962 and the water wheel was dismantled in 1970. It was in an annex on the north side of the courtyard.
