GoHelp

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GoHelp is Deutsche Post DHL's disaster management program in strategic cooperation with the United Nations . The reason for the cooperation is the growing number of natural disasters and the associated logistical challenges in the disaster areas. Along with GoTeach and GoGreen, GoHelp is part of the corporate responsibility program of Deutsche Post DHL .

Organization and way of working

With GoHelp, Deutsche Post DHL supports the United Nations by providing the logistical core competence, the global network and the commitment of the employees free of charge. Through the comprehensive program, GoHelp provides assistance in all phases of disaster management, divided into prevention, disaster relief and reconstruction. Integration into the global humanitarian system enables Deutsche Post DHL to make an effective contribution to helping those affected in the event of a natural disaster.

Prevention - GARD (Get Airports Ready For Disaster)

When a devastating earthquake shook the Iranian city of Bam in 2003 , Deutsche Post employees saw how the airports in the affected regions can become bottlenecks. The large quantities of incoming aid supplies can usually no longer be handled and further transport is delayed or even impossible. To avoid these situations, the GARD training program was launched in 2009 together with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). This is intended to provide preventive help for self-help. Since then it has been carried out at over 40 airports in a total of 17 countries such as: Nepal , Bangladesh , Indonesia , Jordan , Lebanon , the Philippines and Turkey . Together, more than 800 airport employees were prepared for a disaster. Experienced DHL employees from the aviation sector train them free of charge in workshops lasting several days. They show which measures can be taken to increase capacities in the event of a disaster and the maximum number of goods and passengers that can be handled at the airport.

Disaster Relief - Disaster Response Teams (DRT)

In cooperation with the office of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations (UN OCHA) a worldwide network of more than 400 trained volunteers was created. The GoHelp locations in America ( Panama ), Middle East / Africa ( Dubai ) and Asia / Pacific ( Singapore ) cover almost all areas that are frequently affected by natural disasters. If the United Nations calls the DRTs in the event of a disaster, logistics experts are sent to the affected airport within 72 hours. There they carry out logistical tasks such as unloading aircraft as well as storage and inventory of incoming relief supplies free of charge. The teams ensure that the most important relief supplies can get to their destination quickly. A deployment can last up to three weeks. There are always up to ten employees on site, who take turns on a weekly basis.

Reconstruction - help through regional projects

Even after the disaster , the Deutsche Post DHL Group supports its employees in the disaster areas with regional projects and financial support. One example of the support for such projects is the cooperation with the Latin American non-governmental organization Un techo para mi país (A roof for my country) since 2010. In addition, the We Help Each Other (WHEO) aid fund , which was founded after the earthquake in Haiti in 2010 , offers Deutsche Post DHL Group has given employees the opportunity to support their colleagues worldwide financially and to provide those affected by natural disasters with quick and unbureaucratic help.
