Gobiesox maeandricus is a small marine fish from the tortoiseshell family(Gobiesocidae), which occurs on the coast of the northeastern Pacific from southeastern Alaska to southern California , as well as on the coast of Mexican Baja California and the Mexican Revillagigedo Islands . The fish is raresouth of Point Conception on the Santa Barbara Canal .

With a maximum length of 16 cm, Gobiesox maeandricus is the largest shield abdomen in its area of ​​distribution. The head is large, the pectoral fins are broad and short. A fleshy membrane runs from the base of the pectoral fin to the gill opening. The pelvic fins are connected at the front by a membrane, their rays are flexible and support the edge of a conspicuous adhesive disc, which is bordered by a wide fringed skin fold at the back and separated from the pelvic fins by a deep pit. The caudal fin is rounded. The fish are light olive brown, gray to cherry red in color and have dark or light net markings. A few dark lines extended radially from the eyes .

Way of life

Gobiesox maeandricus lives on the rocky coasts of the northeastern Pacific, between algae and in kelp forests . It feeds on small crustaceans and molluscs .

In its habitat it is the largest shield belly and all shield bellies living there with a length of over 7.5 cm are Gobiesox maeandricus . The similar species Gobiesox papillifer is spotted and has numerous papillae on the head, especially around the mouth. Gobiesox rhessodon is smaller and has fewer anal fin rays (9 to 10).
