Gobiocichla ( Gobius = goby + cichla , type genus of the cichlids) is a genus of West African cichlids (Cichlidae) that occurs in rapids in the upper and middle Niger and the Cross River .

The fish are 12 cm long and have an elongated, dorso- ventrally more or less flattened body and, in contrast to most other cichlids, only a single lateral line . They have 33 to 36 vertebrae. The scaling is more reduced than in any other genus of cichlids. The swim bladder is also reduced. The mouth is below . The length of the intestine is a multiple of the length of the body. The throaty pelvic fins are somewhat rounded.

Way of life
Gobiocichla live hidden between stones in rapids and other areas with strong flowing water and feed mainly on the algae growth on the rocks and on microorganisms. They are cave breeders and form a parent family , i. H. both parents take care of spawn and larvae.
