The Gobiocichlini are a tribe of the cichlids (Cichlidae) to which six species are placed, which were previously assigned to the Tilapiini . Gobiocichlini species are found in West Africa from Guinea-Bissau to the east of Liberia , in Ghana in the Ankobra , Bia , Pra , Tano and Volta rivers as well as in the Bosumtwisee and in the rapids of the upper Niger in Mali and the Cross River about eight kilometers downstream distributed by Mamfé ( Cameroon ).

features

The independence of the tribe and the difference to the tilapiini is only supported by three molecular autapomorphies of the mitochondrial DNA . Diagnostic morphological features of the very heterogeneous tribe could not be determined so far. The fish reach body lengths of 6.2 ( Gobiocichla wonderi ) to 24.8 cm ( "Tilapia" brevimanus ).

Genera and species

The tribe consists of the type genus Gobiocichla with two species, the monotypic genus Paragobiocichla , as well as three other species that remain in the genus Tilapia for the time being, as their exact systematic position requires further research.
