"Tilapia" brevimanus is a West African cichlid species thatlivesin the lower and middle reaches of various West African rivers from Guinea-Bissau ( Geba and Rio Corubal ) to Liberia ( Grand Cess River ) and may also occur in the Ivory Coast .

features

"Tilapia" brevimanus is a relatively slender species of cichlid with a maximum length of 25 cm and a body height of 32 to 46% of the standard length . The forehead line is steep, the forehead profile in adult specimens somewhat concave. The teeth of the outer rows of teeth are two-pointed and spade-shaped. The tail end just ends.

The fish are gray-green to silver-yellow in color and show eight or nine vertical, dark stripes on the sides of their body and, depending on the mood, two dark longitudinal stripes. The latter occurs especially in brood-nurturing specimens. Sometimes a mixture of both stripe patterns is visible or the animals are monochrome and stripe-free. Older specimens get a yellow to bronze colored belly. The fins are dark gray and translucent, those of the females are not marked, the dorsal and anal fins of the males show bluish stripes and dots, the caudal fin can be spotted red. The unpaired fins have a narrow red border. The leading edges of the pelvic fins and anal fin are black.

Systematics

The species was in 1911 by the Belgian-British zoologist George Albert Boulenger described . During a revision of the substrate- spawning tilapiini by German scientists, a close relationship between "Tilapia" brevimanus and two other "Tilapia" species with the rapids occurring cichlid genus Gobiocichla was established and a new tribe for the genus Gobiocichla and its closest relatives was introduced Gobiocichlini . Until a new generic name is introduced for the immediate relatives of Gobiocichla , they will remain in their old genera.
