Systematics
Order : Cichliformes
Family : Cichlids (Cichlidae)
Subfamily : Pseudocrenilabrinae
Tribe : Gobiocichlini
Genre : Tilapia
Type : Tilapia busumana
Scientific name
Tilapia busumana
( Günther , 1903)

"Tilapia" busumana is a West African cichlid species that isendemic tothe Bosumtwisee in southwestern Ghana . Due to the pollution of the home waters by mining and the associated entry of heavy metals, "Tilapia" busumana is considered to be endangered (Vulnerable).

features

"Tilapia" busumana is a rather high-backed cichlid species with a typical cichlid shape. The forehead profile of adult animals is usually slightly convex, the caudal fin is slightly rounded. The fish are colored gray and show either several vertical, dark stripes or two dark longitudinal stripes on the sides of their body. The chest, stomach and sides of the body can also be yellowish. Bright spots may appear on the dorsal fin, anal fin, and caudal fin. The front teeth of the outer row of teeth are two-pointed, the lateral ones are conical. The teeth of the inner rows of teeth are three-pointed with three equally sized tips in juvenile fish and a larger central tip in adult animals. There are eight to twelve gill rakes on the lower gill arch .

Systematics

The species was described in 1903 by the German zoologist Albert Günther as Chromis busumana , but later transferred to the genus Tilapia . For a long time, the species name was used for the cichlids of the Bosumtwisees and for the similar cichlids from the catchment area of the Bia , Tano and Pra rivers in southwestern Ghana and in southeastern Ivory Coast . The latter were separated in 2010 as a separate type of "Tilapia" busumana and were given the name Tilapia pra . They grow larger than "Tilapia" busumana and also differ in their breeding behavior from the cichlids in the Bosumtwisee.

During a revision of the substrate- spawning tilapiini by German scientists, a close relationship between "Tilapia" busumana , "Tilapia" pra and another "Tilapia" species with the rapids occurring cichlid genus Gobiocichla was found and a new tribe for the genus Gobiocichla and their closest ones Relatives introduced the Gobiocichlini . Until a new generic name is introduced for the immediate relatives of Gobiocichla , they will remain in their old genera.
