The Goethe-Gymnasium Sebnitz is a high school in Sebnitz in Saxony .

location

The school is located near the market in Sebnitz along Hertigswalder Straße on the Weberstraße side street.

Building structure

The school building is divided into three parts. All are connected with transitions. These are "House 1", in which the students in grades 8–12 are accommodated, and "House 2", in which all students in grades 5–7 are accommodated. Classes are taught. The third “house” is the gymnasium, in which events take place in addition to physical education.

history

Founding time

In 1907 the design for a new school began. Since the city of Sebnitz profited from the flower industry, it was able to contribute a fifth of the construction costs and take out the rest as a loan. The height difference at the intended location raised concerns. The city had to buy and demolish some properties to make way for the new school building. The planning was carried out by the mayor Otto Steudner, the school director Julius Anders and the city architect Walter Wolff. On May 29, 1907, the foundation stone was laid. On October 28, 1908, there was the inauguration with the move of 1400 school children to the new so-called "School Palace".

The city's population grew rapidly afterwards. As a result, the city council decided to build an extension on the adjacent mountain road. This was created in the war years 1914/15, in the same style and with similar furnishings. It was connected to the main building by a bridge. A special feature of this new extension was a game room on the top floor, which also served as a film screening room.

Both school houses now offered enough space for 2000 students after many resettled children were added in 1945. There have been several improvements in school facilities over time. In January 1944, the camp of the so-called Kinderlandverschickung (KLV) of the Leibniz School from Leipzig was set up in House 2 . It was about the evacuation of the students from the bombed cities. The house served as a boarding school for the former grades 7 to 10 and also as a school for the privately housed students in grades 5 and 6. With the near end of the "German Reich" the camp was closed in autumn 1944 and the children were brought back to Leipzig .

Time during the GDR

After the war, a unified school developed in which all students up to the 8th grade stayed together. From 1948 to 1951, separate “boys 'school” and “girls' school” followed (for the first time in Sebnitz), and on January 1, 1953, the independent schools Sebnitz I (in the main building) and Sebnitz II (in the adjoining building) were founded. Class expanded. The "First Polytechnic High School Sebnitz" and "Second Polytechnic High School Sebnitz" were created. The buildings gradually needed a major renovation over the years; especially the first polytechnic high school in the main building. But there was a lack of manpower as well as material and plan capacity in the GDR, so that only minor repairs were carried out.

Time after the turnaround

After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the order was given to convert the two polytechnic high schools into a new grammar school. The final plan was as follows:

  • Refurbishment and reconstruction of the former 1st Polytechnic High School
  • Refurbishment of the former 2nd polytechnic high school
  • New construction of a sports hall
  • Construction of playgrounds in the sports hall and at the former 2nd polytechnic high school

With this objective in mind, the renovation of today's "House 1" of the Goethe Gymnasium was tackled. The aim was to start school operations as a G8 grammar school at the beginning of the 1993/94 school year. Extensive investigations into the renovation of "House 1" built in 1907 revealed that the ceiling load-bearing capacities, technical installations and thermal and fire protection requirements only partially corresponded to the current regulations. There was also considerable moisture damage in the basement and ground floor.

With the qualitative requirements that are necessary for running a high school, facilities such as three computer cabinets, specialist cabinets, preparation rooms and a lecture hall had to be provided.

The construction of the sports hall now made it possible to convert the formerly two large sports rooms into a festive auditorium, a music room and a cafeteria. External plastering, new windows, new roof, new oil heating, plastering work and other cleaning work on the inside of the building were carried out, the necessity of which resulted from maintenance that had been neglected for decades. Werner Rolbieski was responsible for building supervision for the city administration.

Thus, the Goethe-Gymnasium that exists today has existed since the renovation of House 1 in 1993/94.

UNESCO

The Goethe-Gymnasium Sebnitz has been a recognized UNESCO project school since 1999 and is therefore firmly integrated into the global network of these schools.

The school received the title School with Idea 2001 from the Saxon State Ministry of Culture for a program in which pupils grappled with the problems of human rights violations over the past 100 years .

Other important partners in the work as a UNESCO project school are the Goethe Institute in Prague , the Saxon Switzerland National Park Administration , the Bosch company and the Saxon Switzerland Clinic Sebnitz .

On June 24th, 2011 the 2nd sponsored run for the rainforest took place in the Sparkasse Stadium in Sebnitz. Each student was responsible for looking for sponsors. Around 10,000 € were run. “Sonam”, a young girl from Northern India who needed an operation to partially cure her paraplegia, received a part.

Every year the school takes part in the “Social Day” project run by Genial-Sozial .

Flood 2010

On August 6, 2010, heavy rains began over the Sebniz area. The high school was little affected by this, because due to its location, the water flowed down the streets. The market and the bus station, which is the central point of access for schoolchildren, were badly affected, as a result of which lessons were suspended from the start of school from August 9, 2010 to August 11, 2010.

Decline in student numbers

For some years now, the number of students at the grammar school has been falling.
