The Goland weaver ( Ploceus golandi , Syn. Heterhyphantes golandi ) belongs to the family of weaver birds (Ploceidae) to the genus of the bunting weaver ( Ploceus ).

The Latin additional species refers to Captain Goland Clarke, Goland Vanhalt Clarke (1875–1944).

The bird is endemic to Kenya .

The distribution area includes forest areas along the coast, preferably Miombo ( Brachystegia ).

features

The species is 13 cm tall, the male weighs between 23 and 27 g, the female between 21 and 25 g. The male is smaller than the forest weaver ( Ploceus bicolor ), has black on the head and throat reaching to mid-chest level when brooding, black back with yellow wing tips, brown iris and black beak. The underside is yellow, the tail dark olive green. The female is greenish with black stripes on the upper side, the wing covers partly black and yellow stripes, yellow over-eye stripes, yellow throat with indicated front collar in yellow, the underside is yellowish. The beak is gray. Young birds are paler.

The species is monotypical .

voice

The species is described as noisy with rattling and hissing or "sss sss" sounds in the tops, with sudden silence and a characteristic sharp "chip chip" in flight.

Way of life

The diet consists mainly of insects such as beetles , caterpillars and scale insects , but also fruits such as mistletoe .

The species usually looks for food high in the trees, in hunting communities of up to 30 or more individuals, and also forms mixed hunting parties, often together with spectacled stranglers ( Prionops ).

The breeding season is probably between February and March, and the first large breeding colony was discovered in March 2013 . The species is considered a resident bird .

Hazardous situation

The stock is considered endangered . The species is threatened by habitat loss .
