Mark Sherman (born April 17, 1957 in New York City ) is an American jazz musician ( vibraphone , also piano , composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Sherman grew up in the Bronx, attended New York High School of Music and Art as a teenager and wanted to be a jazz drummer; his role model was Elvin Jones . He then studied drums with him before finally the vibraphone became his main instrument. Sherman studied at the Juilliard School in the 1980s and worked in the American jazz scene from the late 1970s; The first recordings were made in 1978 with the Soundworks formation around Thomas Chapin . In 1980 he released his debut album Fulcrum Point (Unisphere), followed by A New Balance (Columbia, 1986). In the following years he played a. a. with Rodney Jones ( The Unspoken Heart ), Freddie Hubbard ( Riding High ), Joe Beck ( Back to Beck ) and Larry Coryell He has also accompanied vocalists such as Peggy Lee , Maureen McGovern , LaVerne Butler , Ruth Brown and Lena Horne .

In the 2010s Sherman continued to work with musicians such as Eddie Mendenhall, Erin McDougald, Dan Block, Tim Hegarty and with Kenny Barron , with whom he released the 2014 duo album Interplay (Chesky) with jazz standards such as Dear Old Stockholm , Darn That Dream , Orange Was the Color of Her Dress, Then Blue Silk and Polka Dots and Moonbeams . In the field of jazz, he was involved in 49 recording sessions between 1978 and 2018, according to Tom Lord . Currently (2019) Sherman leads a quartet that includes Vincent Herring , Essiet Okon Essiet and Tim Horner . Sherman teaches piano, vibraphone and drums at the Juilliard School.

According to Alex Henderson ( Allmusic ), Sherman is influenced by Bobby Hutcherson , Milt Jackson , Gary Burton and Mike Mainieri .
