Əfrasiyab Bədəl oğlu Bədəlbəyli (also Äfrasiyab Bädälbäyli , Russian Афрасияб Бадалбек оглы Бадалбейли * 19th April 1907 in Baku , Russian Empire ; † 6. January 1976 in Baku, Azerbaijan SSR , Soviet Union ) was a Soviet-Azerbaijani composer , conductor , musicologist , Librettist and publicist . He was particularly important in the development of Azerbaijani ballet .

Life

Əfrasiyab Bədəlbəyli's father was a teacher in Baku. He himself graduated from the Oriental Faculty of the Azerbaijan State University in 1930 in linguistics . He also studied music. One focus of his activity was conducting. He is one of the first Azerbaijani conductors. This career began in 1927 when he directed the opera Asli va Karam by Üzeyir Hacıbəyov . From 1930 he studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow in the conducting class of Konstantin Solomonowitsch Saradschew and graduated in 1932. From 1934 to 1938 he studied in the composition class of Boris Isaakowitsch Seidman (1908–1981) at the Leningrad Conservatory . For several years he continued his conductor training as an assistant at the Kirov Theater . First he wrote the music for various theater performances. These included pieces by Mirzə Fətəli Axundov , Hüseyn Cavid (1882–1941), Səməd Vurğun and Cəfər Cabbarlı (1899–1934). Bədəlbəyli wrote the first Azerbaijani ballet Qız qalası [Tower of Virgins]. It was performed at the Azerbaijani State Opera Ballet Theater in the 1940s. He also wrote the ballet Tərlan and in 1941, together with his teacher Seidman, the opera Xalq qəzəbi [ People's Anger ]. On the occasion of the eight hundredth birthday of Nizami Gəncəvi , he produced the opera Nizami in 1947 . The libretto for his opera Söyüdlər ağlamaz was awarded a second prize in a competition . In addition to the classics of concert literature, he mainly devoted himself to Azerbaijani music and his own compositions. Əfrasiyab Bədəlbəyli also worked as a publicist, librettist and translator. He wrote the textbooks for the operas Bahadur və Sona by Süleyman Ələsgərov (1924-2000), Qaraca qız by Əşrəf Abbasov , Bahadur və Sona by Süleyman Ələsgərov (1924-2000) and Qızıl açar by Boris Seidman. He has also translated various text books into Azerbaijani, including the libretto of Peter Tchaikovsky's opera Jolanthe and that of Gioacchino Rossini's opera Il barbiere di Siviglia .

Bədəlbəyli has written treatises, books and articles on topics of music theory and music history such as Musiqi haqqında söhbət [Talking about music], the monograph Gurban Pirimov and the music lexicon Musiqi terminləri lüğəti [glossary of musical terms] are important musical books in Azerbaijani. He served on the editorial board of Ədəbiyyat və incəsənət [Literature and Art] and Elm və həyat [Science and Life] magazine, as well as a member of the editorial board of Azərbaycan Sovet Ensiklopediyası [Azerbaijani Soviet Encyclopedia ]. He was the artistic director of the Azerbaijan State Broadcasting Committee and the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic. He was a board member of the Azerbaijani Composers Society and head of the musicology department for many years . Until his death, he was a conductor at the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet House in Baku.
