The gold silk moss ( Orthothecium chryseon , also Orthothecium chryseum ) is a deciduous moss species from the Plagiotheciaceae family .
features
The moss forms golden-green to straw-colored, silky-glossy and easily crumbling lawns. The plants, up to 10 centimeters in size, have few branches and are ascending to upright. The oval-elongated and briefly pointed leaves are deeply longitudinally folded. The leaf margins are rolled up all around. The rib is missing or only indistinctly short and double. The elongated capsule is slightly inclined, when emptied it is curved and strongly constricted under the mouth.
The delimitation to other species of the genus has not been clarified. There are various transitional forms that cannot be clearly assigned.
Location claims and distribution
The moss grows on moist limestone and calcareous silicate rocks in shady, often north-facing locations. In the Alps it lives in the alpine to subnival altitude range, but is rare.
Worldwide occurrences of Central and Northern Europe , Northern Asia and North America are given.
