The Plagiotheciaceae are a family of pleurocarpic deciduous mosses , which are mainly characterized by their flattened foliage .

description

This family, similar to the Hypnaceae , is characterized above all by the two-line foliage of many species. In this case, the leaf surfaces are all on one level. However, there are also species in the family with leaves that protrude on all sides as well as roof-tiled leaves.

The leaves have no central rib or a short double rib. The cells of the leaf surface are prosenchymatic in most species , i. H. very elongated, in a few species also loosely elongated rhombic. Often the leaves of the flattened leafed species are asymmetrical.

The cells of the leaf wings are often well differentiated and, in many species, run far down the stem.

The plants always grow creeping, whereby the side branches can also be creeping or ascending. Many species are also completely unbranched.

The oblong-cylindrical capsules stand on a long seta and have a double peristome . They can be either upright or inclined.

distribution

The family is widespread worldwide, with species-rich kinship groups being met in the tropical as well as in the temperate and cooler regions.
