Orthothecium is a moss species from the order of Hypnales .

features

The mosses have a strong metallic sheen. They are golden green, red brown or green. The stems are delicate to strong and usually not very branched. Some form stolons . The trunks and branches are densely leafed. The leaves stand upright or slightly one-sided. They may or may not be folded, lanceolate and slowly pointed. They are entire. One rib is missing or short and double. The lamina cells are prosenchymatic and spotted. The leaf wing cells are not particularly differentiated.

The seta is red. The capsule stands upright or is slightly inclined. The lid of the capsule is conical. The peristome is double.

Distribution and locations

The genus is native to the northern hemisphere and has a boreo-alpine distribution. The representatives grow on rocks and are limestone.

Systematics

The genus is part of the Plagiotheciaceae family . It comprises 10 species, of which the following occur in Germany:

Gold silk moss ( Orthothecium chryseon )

Small silk moss ( Orthothecium intricatum )

Reddish silk moss ( Orthothecium rufescens )

Tight silk moss ( Orthothecium strictum )
