Plagiothecium , the Germans also skew capsule Moose called, is a genus of mosses from the family of Plagiotheciaceae .

description

The medium-sized to robust, always prostrate species of this genus usually grow unbranched.

The trunks are two-lined and have flattened leaves, only in rare cases is there a roof-tiled leaf covering. The oval to lanceolate leaves are usually more or less asymmetrical and usually run down clearly on the stem. The leaf margin is finely serrated at most at the leaf tip. A vein is missing or short and double. The cells of the leaf surface are elongated and narrow ( prosenchymatous ).

The capsules can be upright or inclined. They are closed by a conical or short-beaked lid.

Many species can reproduce vegetatively through elongated, multicellular brood bodies that are formed on the leaves or in the leaf axils.

distribution

The genus is distributed worldwide, but especially in areas with a temperate climate.

Most European species grow in forests on very different substrates .

Types (selection)

Depending on the opinion, the genus consists of around 100 species, some of which are difficult to distinguish from one another. Recent research suggests that the problem stems from attempts to divide inseparable clans into different species. In the following list of European species, which according to Frey et al. 1995 ("Small cryptogam flora"), therefore some species are grouped together.
