Plagiothecium succulentum is aspecies of deciduous moss that is not uncommon in Europe to be found in forests. It belongs to a family of Plagiothecium -Moosen which is often divided into several types. In particular, the widespread Plagiothecium nemorale is included here. In German, the type is called "juicy flat moss".

description

The mostly dark green, but often brownish green, prostrate plants are unbranched and 3 to 5 cm long.

The leaves are clearly flattened from the stem. They are oval and gradually lanceolate. The leaf margin is almost entire even at the leaf tip. The single or bifurcated veins are stronger than most other plagiothecium species. The cells of the leaf wings, which run down narrowly on the stem, are rectangular, but not noticeably spacious (inflated).

The capsules stand upright.

In the above-mentioned separation of other species, the strength of the leaf vein and the size of the cells of the leaf blade play a role.

Distribution and location requirements

The moss grows on moist forest floor, but also on moist rock or on the bottom of trees.

It occurs in all of the temperate areas of the northern hemisphere ( North America and Eurasia from Europe to Japan and south to North Africa). In Central Europe it is widespread in not too dry forests.
